Frequently asked questions
How much of London can we see in a half day?
One area properly, or two if they happen to be close together. Westminster and the river make a good half day, as do the museums and the parks, or Greenwich on its own. Trying to cross the city twice in four hours produces a great deal of traffic and very few photographs. We will tell you honestly what fits before you commit.
Can the car stop outside Buckingham Palace?
No, and neither can anybody else. The Mall and the roads around the palace are restricted, and on ceremonial days they close entirely. You are set down nearby and walk the last stretch, which is short and rather pleasant through the park. The same is true of several famous places, and we always tell you in advance where a walk is involved.
Is the chauffeur also a tour guide?
No. Your chauffeur knows London well and will point things out and answer questions as you go, but that is local knowledge rather than a formal qualification. If you would like proper historical commentary and somebody to take you inside the buildings, we can research a qualified guide to accompany you for part or all of the day and put the options to you.
What happens if it rains all day?
The day changes shape rather than being lost. We move the indoor stops earlier, shorten the walking stretches, and use the car for the parts that would be miserable on foot. Coats and umbrellas live in the boot, and you are set down at the door rather than a street away. Most guests find a wet day in a car far better than a wet day on a bus.
Can we take children with us?
Yes, and the car makes a long day far easier with children in it. Child seats are arranged at the time of enquiry rather than on the day, so tell us the ages and approximate heights of the children travelling. Mention a pushchair as well, since it affects boot space. Shorter stops and a park in the middle of the afternoon usually work better than three museums.
Can we go out to Windsor or the Cotswolds instead?
Windsor, Hampton Court and Kew all sit comfortably within a London day. Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge and the Cotswolds are considerably further, and those are better arranged as a private tour, where the driving is planned as part of the day.
