Warwick is a genuine medieval fortress on a sandstone bluff above the Avon, with a curtain wall, gatehouse and two impressive fourteenth-century towers. The towers, the walls and the views

Getting in and the walk from parking

The main car parking sits some distance from the entrance across open ground, and the walk is longer than most people expect, particularly at the end of a full day with tired children. The Lord Leycester Hospital by the west gate is a remarkable timber-framed survival, and the Mill Garden beside the castle bridge is a small private garden with the best view of the castle from below.

Pairing Warwick with Stratford or Kenilworth

Stratford-upon-Avon is a short run south and makes an obvious second half of the day, though doing both properly is ambitious with children. Kenilworth Castle to the north is quieter, ruined and atmospheric, with Elizabethan garden reconstructions. For a longer itinerary the northern Cotswolds begin within half an hour, so Warwick can open a two-day country trip rather than closing a single day out.
